Titus 2:4 "..train the younger women to love their husbands and children...."
Modeling God as a Parent!
In yesterday's post, I wrote about learning to parent with grace. Although the
Bible doesn't list a lot of verses that deal directly with 'how to parent', there
are many references with the word family, father, mother, bride, groom, and
children. If we look at God as the model parent, we can read about how God
treats His children, and use it as our example.

The Bible that I use for my devotions is called the Family Worship Bible and has
some interesting notes. Some of those notes deal with using God's example as a
model parent. As God has created and sustained mankind through love and
compassion, we are to do the same, Psalm 103:13, Matthew 6:9. As God has
enduring, patient love towards us, we are to have the same type of love for our
children.

God is involved with His children, and even disciplines them. Even the
discipline is nurturing, Hebrews 12:10-11. God models sacrificial love that
seeks the best for His children, and we are to do the same.
The atmosphere in our home should be a reflection and extension of God's love
for us. It should be a safe place to nurture and affirm our children.
Because every human being has eternal value and worth, (because they are created
in the image of God), we are to show them unconditional love and respect,
regardless of age!

I think it's interesting that the Bible talks about children obeying their
parents, which is the first commandment with a promise, and it also talks about
fathers not exasperating their children. Ephesians 6:1-4. Both parents and
children have value and have responsibilities towards each other.

Mutual respect, grace, and lavish love have an undeniably HUGE effect on each
member in a family!

What are you thoughts???

Thank you for this! I completely agree with using God as a model for parenting, although even then I think that can be interpretted in different ways. I recently read a great article on this topic that spoke of Old Testament parenting (under the law) and New Testament parenting (under grace) that was a great reminder of God's grace and love in parenting us. Blessings to you and your family!

I find it fascinating to look at biblical lessons learned about parenting apart from the traditional verses. The Bible is packed with parenting advice when you really get into it. I would love to have you link this up to Titus 2 Tuesday next week on Cornerstone Confessions. Hopping over from Women Living Well. Kathy
